This morning, some time around 7:30 am and just before he left for work, my husband came in and woke me up. The cow was getting ready to have her baby. And how was he so sure? The big bubble hanging from under her tail!
I jumped up and got my little Nikon Coolpix L3. It had been ready for a few weeks actually. Unlike my bigger Nikon D40x, the little camera has a video mode. I had been hoping to catch the calving on video so I could post it and the less squeamish of you could see a real cow giving birth to a live calf!
Of course the whole thing would not have worked had she had the baby at night. But she didn't and I was able to capture the birthing.
The video is about 7½ minutes long. Originally it was about 17 but the file was too big to be uploaded to Blogger. You will notice the breaks where the program cut pieces out to make the original video shorter.
By the way, I think it's a heifer calf (girl) but I couldn't get close enough to tell yet. Ladysmith gets a little protective for the first couple of days. I'll try and find out and let you know tomorrow.

Little baby bovine is so cute! Especially when it is trying to stand up.

Congrats!
I know the miracle of birth is a very serious thing, but I couldn't help laughing at the calf's attempts to get up! I hope you have video of babies first steps.
Thank you and congratulations! So glad you got that on video. I wanted to see it stand up, too. I had to chuckle at the sound Ladysmith made when the calf finally popped out.
Thanks for sharing your blessed event.

I'm afraid I laughed too, when it flipped over right there towards the end. I could just imagine it was slightly embarrassed and said "I meant to do that!"
